The mission of the WWF World
Wildlife Fund is to save nature and to lower down the threats of life.
Freshwater
Pakistan facing the freshwater the issue that is affecting the food and life of individuals. Still, in 21 century
the shortage of water which is increasing day by day due to domestic,
industrialization, and urbanization.
Mission:
WWF started the Programme
to have sustainability in the freshwater in Pakistan. It is the welfare for
the people and nature.
Goal:
To have the eco-environment and flourishing the species.
Aims:
- Improvement in policies.
- Implementation of the policies within 3 years.
- Protection of Indus Basin River.
Why WWF is working?
They are here to have the maintenance of the health, hydrological process and biological miscellany in Indus River, Pakistan. They are here to develop the sustainability of the freshwater.Threats:
The increasing population that affects the urbanization and industrialization which decrease the quality of the water. The use of water by industries also decrease the quantity in the country. According to the report, Lahore groundwater was about 5m deep. But now it is more than 40m deep. The water capacity of dams like Tarbela, Mangla, and Chashma is reduced by 27%. Whereas the quality also decreased as the industrialization is increased. Different chemicals are in the freshwater which toxic and untreated sewage is harmful to life.
Different diseases are spread around. Agricultural water is used by these toxic canals. The quality of the water will ultimately affect the livestock, fishes, vegetables, and forest.
What WWF is doing?
Promoting water to lessen the impacts on industrialization and agriculture development. They promote infrastructure and sustainability. Need and demands in social and economic purposes. Establish the conservation network of Indus River.- Water stewardship
- Water security
- Water conservation
Wildlife:
WWF is working to protect the wild life of the Pakistan that include the Indus dolphin, snow leopard, common leopard, white backed Vulture, marine turtles, cetacean, sharks and tuna.Threats:
In the Indus River there are a wide range of dolphins which is caught by the fishing nets with the unsustainable fishing practices. After the devastating flood, many mortalities were occurred. There is a threat to the sharks which is overexploited. The high amount of sharks are caught by the gillnet fleets and trawling.
Threat to the turtles are increasing world wild but the special species of Pakistan are surviving due to the climate change. They are unable to get the freshwater.
What WWF is doing?
They are monitoring the project related to the shark fish which is caught trade and landed. For protecting the turtle the WWF is working in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have legislation and working for freshwater. Sustainability is one of the big tasks to improve the life of species. For the protection of cetaceans, they try to make the water clean and fresh. WWF is introducing sustainable fishing to maintain a healthy ecosystem.Ecoregion: Indus Ecoregion
Indus The ecoregion is in the top 40 richest biologically Ecoregion in the world. It has
the harbors riverine forest, mangrove forests in the Indus River or coastal
areas. Its covers the large part of the Sindh province like 65% in which it
covers 18 districts, and the other is in Baluchistan. The Indus Ecoregion is
located in the semi-arid environment. Beside the Indus River, the Indus
ecoregion port is located, and it is the only ecoregion which is fully located
within Pakistan boundaries, and the other is in the ecoregions.
Local Species:
(A) Animals
Small
Indian Civet (Viverricula indica) is the native of the south side. Fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) is the
medium size cat of the south or Southeast Asia. And we
have some other species like Indus dolphin (Platanista minor), Chinkara (Gazella bennettii), and some more.
(B) Plants
- Aak (Calotropis procera) is in the family of Apocynaceae that is from North Africa and most of from Africa or
Southside and is a species of flowering plant and it is used for different
useful things
- Gah Eragrostis japonica) is a type or
species like grass, which is found in the Africa and Eurasia and it is a known
as a name of weed in many areas.
And there are some other species
like), Babur (Acacia nilotica), Baid Mushk (Eucalyptus
camaldulensis), Ber (Ziziphus nummularia),
After that, the Indus ecoregion are facing some type of threats
like vanishing of key species, destruction of forests, water scarcity.
What WWF Pakistan is doing for this?
WWF is concentrating on the parts which have majority or problems like they are doing initial efforts on the Indus ecoregion, and they are planning some activities like they are going to bear fruits for the next several years and they are providing a sound platform for developing.
Forest
Salt Range:
It is situated in Punjab and it lies between the Jhelum and
Indus rivers. It is 175 km long and it has a Sakesar point with the 1600m or
height and it has a historical heritage
and ecological heritage, and there are many other historical places like lies Takh –e- Babari (the Seat of Emperor Babar), templese.g
Katas.
Local Species:
The Salt range is also known as the home of the Punjab urial (wild sheep). They are also known as arkars or
shapo. The Urial wild sheep has a very rear thing like it has reddish long fur
that fades during winter and the male have the other color ruff like the black
one.
The salt range has also some local species like the Asiatic wolf
(Canis lupus), Grey Wolf, Chinkara Gazelle (Gazella bennettii), Indian
pangolin, Jungle cat and Common Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) etc.
Threats:
The Salt range is facing many threats because of the mining
process, cement factories are making their factories over there. The illegal
hunting is growing day by day for their trade of scales like traditional
medicine. There are also graze hunting competition over there, and there are
many illegal things are happening and there is a permit which is issued by the
government functionaries for the illegal trade.
What WWF Pakistan is doing for this?
They are doing surveys regularly to monitor the population
dependent birds and they are making plans for the important lakes in wildlife
department and for the Punjab Forest. They are also setting up plants for communities
to give some relief to the habitat of the Punjab urinal which is also
important for the birds and they are making solar panels for this and
installing them, and they are opened various avenues to make them aware of the
ecotourism and providing them additional sources for the communities education center and bird watching huts at Ucchali and Kallar
Kahar lakes.
Food
Agriculture
is the largest sector in Pakistan because of most of the people living in rural
areas of Pakistan? About 62 percent of the total population live in rural areas and
these are connected indirectly or directly with the agriculture sector. That’s why
agriculture sector has a great impact on Pakistan’s socio-economic setup.
According to WWF 45 percent of Pakistan’s total labor force serve in the agriculture
sector. This sector is a supplier of raw material to industries for processor
spin that raw material and contributing their part to Pakistan’s exports. As a
part of the global program, WWF aims to make agriculture items like cotton and
sugarcane refine part of the supportable industry. WWF aims to provide a friendly
environment.
Mission:
Mission is
to empower and construct capacity of isolated resources of poor farmers and
communities. Our mission is to provide a friendly environment to farmers or
agriculturists.
Goals:
Our main goal is to ensure that the production of the crop is durable and has minimum Impact
of the negative environment with climate change. Our goal is to encourage the private
sector to purchase durable products.
What WWF is doing?
WWF
Pakistan has been working with organizations, government, farmers, business,
research institutions and different associations to find and discover the
methods for developing cotton and sugarcane in Pakistan by utilizing less water
and pesticides since 1999 under the SAP program.
Supportable
agriculture is an important component of the general exertion to make human
activities perfect with the requests of the world’s biological system. If we
want to use the world’s resources wisely then we understand the different
approaches of biological agriculture are required.
Projects:
These are
the different projects:
·
Pakistan sustainable Cotton initiative-V
·
Exploring possibilities of organic seed cotton
production in Pakistan- II.
Climate and Energy
The energy is the major source of GHG’s in Pakistan.
Industrial is 6% and the forest is 3% agriculture is 39%. The GHG affects climate change which is particular in focus. The degradation of natural
resources reduces the freshwater flow which gives bad impact on life. The disaster of communities in prioritized by the ecosystems which will enhance through awareness and capacity building session.
